Apigenin is a naturally occurring flavone glycoside found in many fruits and vegetables, but most notably in chamomile flowers which may account for the soothing effects of chamomile teas and supplements.
Researchers suggest that the flavonoid constituents in apigenin may promote stress relief at a cellular level and support better sleep quality. Studies indicate that apigenin may bind to benzodiazepine (BZ) receptors and moderate GABA-activated activity. GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid) is an inhibitory neurotransmitter popular for promoting sleep by calming an active mind. The most promising work to date is being done with regard to the prostate, but research shows apigenin benefits within other tissues as well.
